April 2023 Message from the BoardWritten by Lisa Rogers, CCTM SecretaryWelcome to the April 2023 CCTM Newsletter. CCTM is a non-profit designed to support educators with the teaching and learning of mathematics. This month our board message is by Lisa Rogers, our CCTM Secretary and her thinking around the amazing professional learning opportunities CCTM has provided her and her colleagues. CCTM: Moving Forward and Connecting the WorkAs I reflect on the impact CCTM has had on me as a mathematics educator, I remember the first CCTM conference I attended in 2017. I was inspired and challenged by mathematics educators who asked questions like:
These questions and many more served as a catalyst for me to want to continue to learn; grow; and provide deeper, more meaningful mathematics experiences for students. The 2017 CCTM conference and the several that followed did the same for numerous other educators across the state of Colorado and beyond. When the pandemic hit, CCTM pivoted and provided multiple virtual learning webinars followed by a virtual conference in the fall of 2020. This conference served as the launch for a virtual book study on the NCTM Taking Action series. The book study provided an opportunity for educators to anchor themselves to the 8 effective mathematics teaching practices during unpredictable and tumultuous times. CCTM recognized that while the challenges presented by the pandemic were many, it also provided space for reflection on current practices and an opportunity to do things differently. As CCTM continues to offer a host of new learning opportunities, two questions continue coming up: What are the strategies that help us as educators translate educational philosophy into classroom practice? How do we bring the 8 effective math teaching practices to life in the classroom? On June 29, CCTM is extremely excited to offer a one-day institute, Teaching for Thinking Through Reasoning Routines, which will help us do just that. The day of learning will focus on how to use reasoning routines in the classroom to: effectively engage students in meaningful discourse, ask purposeful questions, elicit evidence of student thinking, and so much more.
