Teaching for Thinking Book Study

CCTM has kicked off a free virtual book study on Teaching for Thinking for the 2023-2024 school year.  This book study is intended as a follow up and opportunity to put into practice what was presented at the Teaching for Thinking Summer Learning Institute.  Books can be purchased from Heinemann, Amazon, or your favorite bookseller.

The study is running through May 2024.  Two sessions (Tuesday afternoon and Thursday evening) will be offered each month to offer flexibility for attendance.  Attendance is not required from one month to the next, unless you would like to apply for college credit in the spring of 2024.  CCTM members who participate in the book study will have access to continuing education hours, book study resources, and session recordings.  Optional college credit is available for an additional fee from Colorado Mesa University.

Book study participants will:

  • Study and implement the Five Essential Strategies for integrating instructional routines into classroom practice

  • Learn, practice and analyze two reasoning routines by reading, planning, and reflecting on student work and video

Sign up for the book study HERE.

Additional Math Celebrations and Opportunities:

  • Have you heard about the new Colorado Academic Accelerator Grant Program (CO-AAP)?  The CO-AAP grant competition is expected to launch by December 15, 2023. Applications will be due February 15, 2024. CDE will award approximately $24 million in state funds over the three-year grant period. For more information, visit theCDE CO-AAP webpage. • The Colorado Department of Education in partnership with Growing Minds is developing math intervention toolkits and training materials to address unfinished learning in math.  Once the toolkits are created, these resources will be available to the public on the CDE website.  As work on developing these toolkits begins, CDE and Growing Minds want to hear your thoughts on the most crucial math skills and areas of concern for K-12 students in Colorado.  Provide your feedback by completing this Stakeholder Input Survey.

  • The National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) is holding a regional conference February 7 - 9, 2024 in Seattle, WA. The conference theme, Everyone Belongs Here, aims to celebrate and embrace the experiences and differences that make each child unique. Click HERE for more information.

  • Following the CCTM in-person SAT training with Texas Instruments, several attendees expressed interest in bringing a workshop to their school, district and/or region.  Visit TI SAT Workshop which details the training, delivery options and pricing. While this information does not specifically call out the digital SAT, the training moving forward will be focused around the digital assessment.  If you are interested in learning more, contact Brian Dunnicliffe at [email protected].

  • Middle School Teachers - Are you interested in a middle school mathematics competition? The AMC 8 exam is designed to develop students’ problem-solving skills and interest in mathematics. The exam can be given to students anytime during the week of January 18-24. To encourage greater participation in the AMC 8 exam by traditionally underserved students, the Colorado Math Awards (CMA) is offering grants to help defray the costs. To learn more about Colorado Math Awards and the AMC 8 mini-grant offer, visit the CMA website
