2023-2024 Teaching for Thinking Book Study

On June 29th, CCTM kicked off a year of professional learning with their Summer Learning Institute, Teaching for Thinking. At that workshop, Grace Kelemanik and Amy Lucenta, co-authors of the book of the same name, lead over 150 Colorado educators in activities designed to engage teachers and students in mathematical practices. To follow that June workshop, CCTM invites you to participate in a year-long book study of Teaching for Thinking. Monthly meetings will give educators an opportunity to learn, practice, and understand how a relatively small number of instructional routines can support high-quality classroom teaching and learning.

To accommodate as many educators as possible, we will be offering two cohorts for the book study: Tuesday afternoons from 4:30 - 6:00 pm and Thursday evenings from 6:30 - 8:00 pm. (See below for specific meeting dates.) Each month, both groups will follow the same meeting format, with a virtual, synchronous, 90-minute call to discuss the current month’s book chapter or topic. In between cohort meetings, participants will be asked to do some reading and reflecting and apply the ideas they are learning about in their own classroom.

Q: Why should I participate in the Teaching for Thinking book study?
A: The book study provides the opportunity to collaborate with and learn together with and from other math educators in Colorado and beyond. With a regularly scheduled time to meet and shared content for discussion, the book study will support you in making small changes in your instruction to better support student learning.Teaching for Thinking and the strategies and routines described in the book are designed to foster mathematical teaching practices through routines that position students to reason mathematically and engage in mathematical practices.

Q: Is there a registration fee to participate?
A: There is no registration fee to participate; all educators are welcome to join the sessions. However, CCTM membership is required to access the certificate of attendance, and a fee is required for participants seeking university credit from CSU for their participation.

Q: There are two cohorts. Does that mean I attend two meetings each month?
A: The two cohorts will all cover the same content each month, so you only need to choose ONE meeting per month. You can attend the same cohort day and time each month or switch it up based on your schedule. Due to this flexibility, however, you will be asked to register for each monthly meeting.

Q: What if I can’t make all of the meetings?
A: Feel free to participate in as many meetings as you can and skip the months where your schedule doesn’t allow participation. You will receive certificates of attendance for each session you complete.

Q: Can I participate even if I don’t want the credit or a certificate of attendance?
A: Absolutely! Feel free to attend when your schedule allows and skip when it doesn’t. We do encourage you to attend all of the sessions for the best experience.

Q: How do I get the book?
A: Teaching for Thinking is available from the book's publisher, Heinemann, and other book sellers.

Q: How do I enroll for continuing education credit?
A: CCTM is currently working out the details to make continuing education credit for participation in the book study. More details will be shared when we have them.
