Leveraging Asset-Based Language and Routines in Mathematics Education Asset-based perspectives recognize that students bring significant strengths, talents, and resources to the mathematics classroom. Enacting asset-based pedagogical moves can be challenging, particularly when systems perpetuate deficit-based views on students’ mathematical learning. This session provides strategies to enact asset-based approaches to teaching, focusing on language and classroom routines. |
Keynote FRI - 8:00 (Aspen, Blue Spruce, Cottonwood) |
Let’s Talk About Math How is language development connected to mathematics learning? What role can math teachers play in language-rich learning environments in which all students’ ideas are surfaced, collaboratively examined, and leveraged for learning? |
Keynote TH - 12:30 (Aspen, Blue Spruce, Cottonwood) |
Seven Strategies to Transform Outcomes for Students with Disabilities In this session, we will uncover a new way of supporting students with disabilities (as well as all students) through seven easy-to-implement strategies. Results: increase student confidence and achievement, reduce teacher stress, and elevate the joy of teaching. |
Session #1 Elementary TH - 2:15 (Blue Spruce, Cottonwood) Secondary FRI - 9:45 (Aspen) |
Routines to Scaffold Language & Math In this session we will explore Mathematical Language Routines as an instructional strategy to support students in making sense of mathematical content. You will leave with routines you can introduce on day one that will help your multilingual learners engage and thrive. |
Session #1 Secondary TH - 2:15 (Aspen) Elementary FRI - 9:45 (Blue Spruce, Cottonwood) |
Transform Your Elementary/Secondary Math Class via Asset-based Instructional Routines Which instructional routines do you implement regularly? When are they most effective (or less effective)? We will have fun in this session! First, we will engage in a math task and then share current routines. We will end with you having new strategies to make your go-to routines even more effective. |
Session #2 Elementary FRI - 1:00 (Blue Spruce, Cottonwood) Secondary FRI - 2:10 (Aspen) |
The Power of Revision In this session we discuss the important role that feedback and revision play in language and mathematics learning. You will leave with ideas for creating meaningful opportunities for speaking, listening, reading, and writing that will make your students’ mathematical thinking stronger and clearer. |
Session #2 Secondary FRI - 1:00 (Aspen) Elementary FRI - 2:10 (Blue Spruce, Cottonwood) |
BURST SESSIONS #1 Thursday @ 3:50 |
Explicit Instruction + Students Who Struggle: Do THIS, Not That With a huge shift in the math world to inquiry-based instruction, does explicit instruction still have a place in mathematics? What about if we're teaching students who have struggled for years with math? I think explicit instruction does have a place... BUT there are some things we need to look out for. In this session I will discuss inquiry vs explicit instruction, dive deep into how to make explicit instruction engaging (when you do need to use it), and walk away with asset-based tools to support our 6–12 students who struggle. |
Julianna Tapper CollaboratEd Consulting (Aspen) |
Bridges in Mathematics: Supporting Diverse Learners in K–5 Mathematics Classrooms Are you curious to learn more about Bridges in Mathematics Third Edition? Join this session to understand the changes and enhancements of the curriculum, and the ways Bridges in Mathematics supports diverse learners in K–5 classrooms. |
Jennifer Ranum Math Learning Center (Blue Spruce) |
Small Group Lessons that Accelerate the Learning of Each Student We will engage teachers in lessons that are designed to give students early access to content so they can have conceptual hooks to the mathematical concepts they will see in class. Teachers will learn the importance of how providing students with a preview of skills and concepts prior to their core mathematics class will provide their students with more confidence in their ability to access that content, and more importantly confidence in asking questions or sharing their thinking in a whole group setting. Each teacher will walk away with a sample lesson series that they can use in their own classrooms! |
Dr. Rachael Risley Kim Broker Karen Bryant 2Partner Mathematics Consulting (Cottonwood) |
Supporting Students with Math Language Routines Join us to experience Math Language Routines and a Data Chat Launch for a lesson where students are asked to interpret a variety of graphs and describe the contextual meaning of the point of intersection. Participants will leave with multiple strategies and routines that can be implemented in the classroom immediately. |

BURST SESSIONS #2 Friday @ 11:30 |
Math in Motion! Engagement Beyond the Walls of the Classroom There is a big push to have students generate, collect and analyze real-time data. In this session, we will be using simple sensors and everyday household items to get your students to model data and make those real-world connections. Join us and we'll show you how easy and engaging this is to do in your classroom! |

Productive Math Struggle: Building Thinking Classrooms From Jeffco to Denver to Boulder and Adams 12, discover why the largest districts in the state are choosing this problem-based curriculum. You will see how the warmups in Illustrative Mathematics align with the foundational principles of Building Thinking Classrooms. This session explores best practices including the use of low-floor, high-ceiling tasks to engage all learners, strategies for random group formation, optimizing classroom arrangements for collaboration, and delivering tasks to spark deep thinking. Participants will experience hands-on examples of Illustrative Mathematics warmups and learn how these routines foster equity, engagement, and mathematical thinking from the start of every lesson. A repeat of this session will be offered at 12:10 pm. |

What is Fractional Reasoning, and How Can We Bring it Into Focus? We know that understanding fractions is critical for success in middle and high school mathematics, yet the topic eludes far too many students. Curricula push students to quickly apply operations — adding and subtracting, multiplying and dividing with fractions, forcing teachers to teach and students to use procedures without conceptual understanding. Come learn about an open source project to help shed light on student reasoning and conceptual understanding of fractions in order to develop true fractional reasoning for all (including teachers!) |
