Upcoming Events, Celebrations, Happenings, and Opportunities (ECHO)
-
The Colorado Academic Standards for high school mathematics are currently under revision, and the window for providing feedback is rapidly coming to a close. The draft of the revised standards is available for review and public comment. Feedback focus groups are being held on February 9, 11, and 12. The feedback survey closed on Monday, February 16. Visit the Standards Review and Revision - Mathematics webpage for more information and make your voice heard.
- The Colorado Council for Learning Disabilities welcomes people to register for this year's Math on the Planes, to be held on February 27th and 28th in Englewood. This year's featured presenter is Juliana Tapper and tickets for the event are $190, which includes the event and several meals. The first 100 teachers to register will receive a copy of Juliana's book, Teaching 6-12 Math Intervention: A Practical Framework to Engage Students Who Struggle.

Practical Practices- Back to School Practices
In our Practical Practices section, we highlight strategies you can immediately incorporate into your classroom, along with resources to deepen your understanding. As the school year progresses, it’s an ideal time to reflect on how classroom conversations are shaping student thinking. Purposeful discourse doesn’t happen by accident—it is built through intentional structures that elevate reasoning and ensure every voice is heard. In this issue, we spotlight Enhancing Your Turn and Talk, a simple yet powerful routine that strengthens mathematical discourse, reinforces sense-making, and positions students as active contributors to the learning community.

Partner Spotlight:
In each newsletter, we will highlight one of the amazing partners that collaborate with the CCTM. This will be an opportunity to not only learn from our partners about effective teaching practices, but also about what they offer our math community as a whole.
This newsletter will spotlight Texas Instruments!
Texas Instruments (TI) have been a partner with the CCTM since the inception of our partner program. In fact, we reached out to our friends at TI to help us develop our current partnership program by giving them a chance to offer feedback and insight into what partners would want from working with an organization like CCTM. We at CCTM value our partnership with Texas Instruments as they support us in making an impact in math education. In this spotlight, you will learn not only about what Texas Instruments has to offer but what current research from EdWeek has to say about the use of handheld devices like the TI Calculator.

Spotlighting Colorado Mathematics Educators and Teams

This section of our newsletter allows us to recognize the amazing mathematics teams, educators, and leaders in our community.
In this newsletter, we are spotlighting Laura Tracy from Atlas Middle School. Laura was nominated by Erin Wahler-Cleveland because, although she already had very strong content knowledge, she chose to participate in two Developing Mathematical Ideas seminars (for a total of over 50 hours). Her drive to continue learning, openness to new ideas for how to best support her students, and leadership in learning among other PD participants deserve recognition.

If you want to nominate an educator, leader, or team to be featured in an upcoming CCTM newsletter spotlight, please use the following form. Those selected to be featured in the spotlight will receive an educational care package (and the person nominating will also receive a care package). Use this link to nominate an individual or a team!
Trivia - A History of Mathematics
Each newsletter will have a trivia question. From those who answer correctly, five winners will be randomly drawn to receive CCTM swag.
She was finally recognized for her work and inducted into the Air Force Space and Missile Pioneers Hall of Fame in 2018. Using a room-sized computer and complex algorithms, she mapped the exact shape of the Earth—an achievement that paved the way for the invention of GPS. Who is she?
Submit Your Answer Here
In our last newsletter, we asked you, the members of CCTM, “This individual received a prestigious award in mathematics for her work in complex geometry and dynamical systems. She also helped to establish the Magic Wand Theorem. Her first name is almost a palindrome. Who is this mathematician?”
The answer to this question was: Maryam Mirzakhani
November’s winners were: Steve Beaudoin, Jennifer Latham
