November 2025 Practical Practices

Keeping the Momentum: Routines That Empower Student Voice

In our Practical Practices section of the newsletter, we highlight practices that you can incorporate in your classrooms, including links to outside resources to build your knowledge of that practice. As the school year moves forward, it’s the perfect time to pause and reflect on the routines and practices that keep math learning purposeful and engaging. Consistent structures help students feel confident and capable, while opportunities for student voice ensure that learning remains dynamic and responsive. In this issue, we highlight practical ways to sustain momentum—through routines that empower students to take ownership of their learning and practices that keep mathematical thinking alive in every classroom conversation.

With that being said, we gathered curated resources to support this strong start, including a  Message from NCTM President Latrenda Knighten, Voices that Matter Leveraging Student Insights to Guide Effective Instruction.

Continuing the Year with Routines

  • Which one doesn’t belong and why?

  • Convince me?

  • Does anyone have another reason?

  • What do you notice?

  • What is mathematically the same about pictures A and B?

  • What is different?

  • How many objects do you estimate are in the jar?

  • After each clue is revealed, do you need to adjust your estimate?
