Virtual Learning Session: EmPowering Students Post Pandemic
Presenter: Dr. Joseph Bolz, NBCT Mathematics Teacher and Department Chair at George Washington High School
Date and time: Wednesday, November 16 from 7:00 - 8:00 pm
Description: Prior to the start of the 2020-2021 school year, Dr. Joseph Bolz presented to the CCTM his take on Empowering Students, particularly during this time as we teachers struggled with how to successfully meet students where they were at. The work still continues, and is even more imperative now as students are returning to schools and facing social-emotional as well as academic stressors. Our challenge still remains - how do we teach students about the world using mathematics as a tool for learning and uncovering truths (as well as navigate the many sources of information we face on a daily basis)?

Virtual Learning Session: Differentiation and Discourse: Harnessing the Power of Math Instructional Routines
Presenters: Kim Smith, Secondary Math Specialist in Mesa County District 51, and Lisa Rogers, Student Achievement Coordinator in Fountain-Fort Carson District 8
Date and time: Wednesday, November 30 from 7:00 - 8:00 pm
Description: How can we engage students in low floor, high ceiling mathematics opportunities that give all students a daily math win? This session will help educators harness the power of mathematics instructional routines as a means of differentiating for all students and for pushing students to think critically and creatively about mathematics. The math resources shared in this presentation will give educators easy-to-implement routines that will help students embrace divergent and creative thinking in the mathematics classroom, as well as foster opportunities for rich student discourse. Attendees will leave this session with a wealth of resources of ready-made and easily-adaptable routines that can be implemented in classrooms the following day with minimal prep-time.

The Colorado Math Leaders (CML) in partnership with the Colorado Community College System and Colorado Department of Higher Education recently applied to the Dana Center at the University of Texas at Austin to be part of the Launch Years Initiative 2.0. Colorado's application was accepted, so Colorado will receive guidance and support over the 3 years to develop guidance around mathematics pathways in high school. The goal of this math pathway work will be to help districts around the state implement multiple, rigorous pathways aligned to students' postsecondary plans (statistics, calculus, quantitative literacy, etc.). The Classroom Resource Committee for NCTM is presenting a series of 30-minute webinars that introduce teachers to classroom resources. This November, NCTM will highlight Figure This! This session will focus on how educators can help families of middle school students work through mathematics together using Figure This!, a series of fun and engaging, high-quality challenges that explore real-world contexts outside of the classroom.
